If you’re planning your next Australian golf trip, look no further. The world’s longest golf course is a lot longer than you might think. And it is in South Australia and…Western Australia. Spanning 1365km, Nullarbor Links officially opened in 2009 and follows Eyre Highway crossing the Nullarbor Plain at the Great Australian Bight.

You can start and end in either Ceduna in South Australia or Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. The 18-hole par-72 course features seven holes on existing courses and 11 created at roadhouses and roadside stops along the journey. “It provides a quintessential Australian golfing experience unmatched anywhere else in the world” said Course Manager Alf Caputo. The specially designed holes offer tees and greens utilising artificial grass, with natural Outback land in between. Two of the holes are about 200km apart and the average distance between holes is 66km.

Official scorecards are purchased from Ceduna or Kalgoorlie and the lengthy course is clearly signposted, with golfing equipment available to hire at every hole if you don’t have your own gear. The great Australian outdoors should be taken into consideration too, so please tee up from the designated fairways and refrain from driving your vehicle on them.

With six holes in South Australia and 12 in Western Australia, the Nullarbor Plain offers contrasting environments of pristine beaches and cerulean waters to lush green forests and stark red Outback.

Experience Australian wildlife from eagles to wombats, kangaroos and even whales. As you traverse the terrain make the most of the signage that provides an insight into local history and attractions.

Pro tip: Choose the colour of your golf balls wisely and don’t look out for numbered holes, they are instead named so as to not be preferential to start in either state. Look out for tags like Wombat Hole and Nullarbor Nymph. Upon completion of all 18 holes, be sure to claim a Nullarbor Links Certificate by presenting your completed card at the Kalgoorlie or Ceduna visitor centres. Visit nullarborlinks.com for more info, including addresses and phone numbers for each hole.

It’s a looooooooong way
Make sure your vehicle/s are adept for the lengthy trek and you are well supplied with food and water along with other essentials like fuel and a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). Nullarbor Links aims to complement and enhance the tourism industry on the Eyre Highway and you can stock up along the way.

Visitors are encouraged to stay longer in each region as a source of income for the smaller communities. Free hard copy Nullarbor Plain maps are available from the Ceduna, Kalgoorlie-Boulder and Norseman Visitor Centres but the best option is to download the free interactive map at nullabormap.com.au
