Atoll Rescue: Ningaloo Reef-inspired style for beach and pool days.

Australia’s wild places have always inspired creativity, and the ooGee Australia x Timothy Johnston Art Series Collection is a perfect example of fashion meeting function, art and conservation. For us, this collaboration has become more than just a showcase of local craftsmanship and aerial-inspired artwork – it’s become part of our everyday life. Between my Reef Explorer and my wife’s Atoll Rescue, we’ve worn these hats literally everywhere: by the pool, at the beach, to weekend sporting events, summer parties and even a wedding. They’ve effortlessly blended into every setting.

The partnership itself brings together ooGee (pronounced ew-gee) Australia, a brand committed to revitalising local hat-making, with Sydney-based artist and marine conservationist Timothy Johnston. Johnston’s artwork – vibrant combinations of abstract texture and photographic realism drawn from Australia’s deserts, reefs and coastlines – translates beautifully into the collection. You can see hints of Wistari Reef, Ningaloo, the Flinders Ranges, Balmoral and other stunning locations subtly layered into each design. Each hat carries more than just style, as every purchase supports Taronga’s Reef Recovery Program, with a removable whale-tail pin symbolising that contribution.

What’s struck us most is just how functional these hats are. Every piece offers UPF50+ sun protection and features ooGee’s ComfyFit internal headband, which keeps the hats secure – even when we’ve worn them on windy beaches or during long days out at sporting events. The materials feel premium without being precious thanks to lightweight, breathable Flexibraid, beautifully crafted raffia and Australian wool felt. My Reef Explorer has survived being stuffed into backpacks without losing its shape, and it still looked immaculate at the wedding where it ended up being a quiet showstopper. Meanwhile, my wife’s Atoll Rescue has become her go-to for long, sunny afternoons by the pool. Each hat is handmade at ooGee’s West Gosford facility and independently tested by ARPANSA, adding a layer of trust to the protection they offer. And with prices from $99 to $175, it’s refreshing to find gear that balances quality, artistry and purpose.

The earlier releases in the popular Art Series, including our own Reef Explorer and Atoll Rescue, sit alongside other thoughtful designs like Desert Explorer, Simpson Adventurer, Shoreline Searcher, Urban Explorer, Balmoral Rescue, Dune Explorer, Coral Searcher and Kimberley Adventurer. The expanded lineup – Reef Guardian, Daintree Ranger, Ocean Shield and Coastal Nomad – continues the same design philosophy, combining everyday practicality with subtle artistic references. Whether it’s the oceanic blues that drew me to the Reef Explorer or the reef-inspired textures that first caught my wife’s eye with the Atoll Rescue, each hat has its own quiet storytelling.

Across the range, Johnston’s artwork is integrated with restraint and skill. It never overwhelms the design; instead, it adds depth and interest. The flexible brims, lightweight crowns and breathable fabrics make these hats as suitable for heat-soaked beach days as they are for a packed summer festival or an outdoor wedding. We’ve tested them in everything from coastal humidity to long drives through dusty country roads, and they consistently deliver comfort and durability.

The environmental ethos behind the Art Series has also deepened our appreciation for these pieces. Taronga’s Reef Recovery Program protects coral biodiversity through CryoDiversity Banks and restoration initiatives. Wearing the hats feels like a small but meaningful contribution to reef conservation – an easy way to merge personal style with environmental responsibility. That aligns perfectly with ooGee’s broader commitment to sustainable, locally crafted headwear that protects both people and the planet.

For travellers, these hats are ideal companions. Whether we’ve been exploring new coastal paths, hopping between summer gatherings, wandering markets on sunny weekends or simply lounging by the water, the hats have kept us shaded, comfortable and put-together. They’re pieces you forget you’re wearing until someone compliments them – which, in our experience, happens a lot.

Beyond the Timothy Johnston Art Series, ooGee Australia’s broader headwear range continues to push the boundaries of innovation and craftsmanship, as highlighted in issue 4 of Great Australian Outdoors. Exploring their full collection gives a deeper sense of how the brand blends practical design with local artistry and environmental awareness.

Whether navigating the Outback, strolling along seaside boardwalks or stepping into a summer celebration, the ooGee Australia x Timothy Johnston Art Series Collection offers stylish, protective and eco-friendly headwear. Our Reef Explorer and Atoll Rescue have become staples not just because they look good, but because they feel meaningful – wearable art with purpose, tied to the landscapes and reefs that inspired them.
