Tools that make campfire cooking simple

Thomas Cook

OXO has built its reputation by paying attention to the small, easily overlooked moments in everyday life – the tasks we repeat daily and the minor irritations we’ve often just learned to live with. Rather than reinventing things for the sake of it, the brand focuses on refining how tools actually work in real hands, under real conditions, whether that’s in a kitchen, around a barbecue or out at a campsite.

What sets OXO apart is how broadly that thinking is applied. Their range spans almost every corner of the home, from food preparation and entertaining to cleaning and organisation, and increasingly into outdoor cooking. Across all of it runs the same emphasis on comfort, usability and durability. These are tools designed to be used often, cleaned easily and relied upon long term – which explains why the brand is confident enough to stand behind them with a lifetime guarantee.

That same design thinking carries through into OXO’s outdoor range, where thoughtful design makes a tangible difference in real-world use – especially when cooking away from the convenience of a kitchen.

The Outdoor Grilling Prep & Carry System ($79.95) is a perfect example. On paper, it’s a six-piece, all-in-one system designed to allow you to prep, marinate, transport and serve food with fewer trips between the kitchen/prep area and the grill. In practice, it genuinely does exactly that – and does it exceptionally well.

Recently I used the system for a campfire cook-up, preparing marinated pork belly rashers, beef skewers and veggies. The beef was marinated overnight, then skewered with vegetables and placed into the bottom tray, which had ample length to accommodate them without crowding. The pork rashers were marinated for a few hours in the red tray/container on the day of cooking, while a large batch of vegetables dressed with olive oil and rosemary went into the grey tray/container. Lids on, sealing in the freshness. The raised bottoms of the trays keep food above juices while marinating, ensuring even flavour distribution.

Once everything was prepped, the cutting board went on top and the entire setup was ready to go. When it came time to take the food out to the campfire, it was simply a matter of grabbing the tray with the skewers, stacking the lidded trays on top of the board and heading out. No bowls, no plates, no extra vessels – and I arrived at the campfire fully set up and ready to cook.

One carry, no spills, no disposable waste.

Once cooking was finished, I placed all the freshly cooked meat straight onto the cutting board – which has non-slip accents and deep juice grooves to catch drips – eliminating the need for a barbecue tray or disposable foil. The system is sturdy enough to sit outdoors while people help themselves, or strong enough to carry everything to a table for serving. Either way, there’s no extra mess and no unnecessary waste.

Cleanup was just as impressive. After everyone had eaten, the base tray was washed and used to store all the leftovers – with more than enough room for both meat and vegetables. The cutting board was washed, fitted on top as a lid and the entire setup went straight into the fridge. No additional containers, no disposable waste, and no mess left behind. The leftovers tasted even better the next day.

What started as a campfire solution has now become a regular part of my home barbecue setup as well. Gone are the days of constantly heading back and forth inside, opening and closing doors, letting cool air escape and blowflies enter the house. Now I prep everything once, carry it out in one trip and have everything I need immediately. When everything is cleaned and packed away, the set nests compactly – ideal for camp kits and home storage alike – and the familiar ‘missing lid or container’ problem simply doesn’t exist with this system, which is all dishwasher safe.

The Outdoor 4-Piece Camp Stove Cooking Set ($129) proved to be a natural companion to the prep system. The set includes a silicone tool rest, silicone turner, silicone spoon and 10.5″ stainless steel tongs. The silicone tool rest does more than just keep utensils off the ground – it also provides a surface to place a hot carbon steel pan once lifted off the fire. When not in use, the rest wraps neatly around the tools for easy carry and storage.

Each tool is thoughtfully designed for outdoor use, including silicone handles that are both grippy and comfortable. The turner glides easily under food and flexes just enough for confident flipping. The spoon’s shape makes it genuinely useful for chopping, stirring, tasting and serving. The tongs are long enough to work comfortably over a campfire without being awkward or cumbersome, and the built-in bottle opener is one of those features you don’t think about until you really need it. All tools include hanging loops, making them easy to keep off surfaces while cooking, and everything is dishwasher safe and cleans up easily.

The final piece of the puzzle is the Outdoor Carbon Steel Pan with Removable Handle (10″/26cm, $110). This pan comes pre-seasoned, meaning you can wash it and start cooking immediately, and it develops a natural non-stick patina with use. Being lighter than cast iron, it heats quickly and evenly, making it ideal for campfire cooking.

I primarily use the pan for vegetables over the campfire, especially when cooking meat on a metal grate where smaller items would otherwise fall through. That said, it has also performed brilliantly for steaks and fish cooked directly over coals. For best results, handwash and dry the pan not too long after use.

The standout feature is the removable handle. With a simple slide of a button with your thumb, it attaches and detaches easily, allowing the pan to be lowered onto the fire and lifted off safely. While the pan and food are extremely hot, the handle remains cool, removing the need for gloves or improvised grips.

The removable handle also makes packing and storage far easier, eliminating the problem of a long handle sticking out and taking up unnecessary space. It can even be ‘reverse attached’ so it never gets misplaced or lost. While my pan is the 10″ version, it’s also available in 8- and 12″ sizes, and choosing a larger option – or even multiple sizes – makes sense depending on your cooking needs. Because it’s designed for high-heat cooking, ovens up to 350C and stove tops are all good, including induction.

You simply can’t beat campfire cooking.

Combined with the Outdoor Grilling Prep & Carry System and 4-Piece Camp Stove Cooking Set, this pan completes what I’d consider the ultimate campfire cooking setup. Everything works together seamlessly, saving time, reducing mess and making outdoor cooking far more enjoyable. It’s a system that doesn’t just look good in photos – it genuinely performs in real-world conditions and transitions effortlessly from campfire to home barbecue use.
