STIHL KOA 20 Battery Air Inflator – The inflator that finally lives up to its promises

Thomas Cook

I’ve lost count of how many so-called ‘convenient’ inflators I’ve gone through over the years. The cheap ones from department stores that burn out after a handful of uses, the ones with mystery-brand batteries that die whenever you actually need them, and, yes, even that infamous ‘miracle inflator’ plastered all over teleshopping channels. You know the one – the handheld device that supposedly pumps up a car tyre in seconds. Mine barely managed a basketball. After enough disappointments, I promised myself I’d step up to something built for real Australian conditions, not late-night commercials. That hunt led me to the STIHL KOA 20 Battery Air Inflator, and it’s fair to say it has completely changed how I handle inflating and deflating just about everything.

Right out of the box, the KOA 20 felt different. Solid. Purposeful. Not a toy, not a gimmick, but a proper piece of gear. And that matters, because like so many Australians, a good chunk of my life is spent outside – whether that’s heading off on long highway trips, loading or unloading trailers, spending weekends by the water or dealing with the never-ending rotation of tyres, balls, pool toys and inflatables at home. I needed something that wasn’t going to fall over at the first sign of actual use.

The first real test came in my driveway with my car tyres. No matter how diligent you are, they always seem to need topping up at the most inconvenient times. With past inflators, this was either a long process or a frustrating one. The KOA 20? I set the desired pressure on the display, clipped it on and let it do its thing. Watching it automatically shut off at the exact PSI was a small revelation. It’s one of those features you never really appreciate until you’ve experienced it – like discovering cruise control or automatic headlights for the first time. You suddenly wonder how you lived without it.

It’s also powerful enough to deal with completely flat vehicle tyres, bringing them back up to pressure in minutes. What I really like for tyre work is that the unit shows the current pressure as soon as you connect it, then displays the live pressure as it inflates, before shutting itself off exactly where you’ve set it. You can switch between psi, kPa and bar, and the display is bright, easy to read and backed up by simple, user-friendly controls. The three-bar battery gauge is always visible too, so you know exactly where you stand on charge at a glance.

One of my favourite features for tyres is the high-pressure hose itself. The fitting swivels independently of the hose, making it simple to attach and keep securely seated while inflating. The attachable high-volume hose also locks into place and stays there during both inflation and deflation – no awkward wrestling or holding it down while it runs. It’s one of those small details that makes a huge difference when you’re using it day in, day out.

No sweat, just play.

Then came the pool gear – and this is where the KOA 20 really shines for me. Easily changing between the at-hand accessories is extremely handy, particularly when you’re dealing with pool inflatables. Why are valves always a different size? Having all the adapters included – and stored neatly on the unit – makes swapping between them quick and painless. Switching the KOA 20 into high-volume mode and having it glide through bulky inflatables without complaint was downright satisfying. Giant pool toys, oversized lounge floats – it handled the lot without sweat, swearing or halfway breaks.

Deflating is just as impressive. Adding the attachable hose to the rear port lets you dump air from large inflatables in mere seconds, whether packing up at home or clearing space while camping. The hose stretches out to reach longer and compacts back down perfectly for storage under the unit. The ability to change modes and hoses on the fly makes it practical even when you’re away from home.

Bike tyres were next. What used to be a fiddly chore became a quick pit stop before rides. I also appreciate that everything you need comes in the box, including the needle for sports balls. Again, it’s the small, thoughtful inclusions that make the difference in everyday use.

But the true test – where I really became a believer – happened at nighttime on the road. Somewhere between a roadhouse and a patch of scrubland, I checked the tyres and found one starting to sag. Normally this is the moment you either limp toward the nearest servo or cross your fingers and hope you make it to a town. Instead, I reached into the back of the car, pulled out the fully charged KOA 20, and sorted the problem right there on the roadside shoulder. No cords, no generators, no hunting for power.

The rubber feet kept it steady on uneven ground, the LED work light – which is remarkably bright – lit the valve perfectly and doubled as a handy roadside torch, and the display remained clearly visible. That single incident alone proved its worth.

I’ve taken it camping too, and that’s where it really earns its keep. Air mattresses, camping pillows, inflatable kayaks – anything that needs pumping or deflating becomes painless. The deflate mode is brilliant for getting every last bit of air out when packing up camp and the relatively quiet hum of the pump is a far cry from the screaming motors of the cheap inflators I’ve owned in the past.

One thing I’ve grown to admire is just how thoughtfully designed the KOA 20 is. Everything has a place. The hoses clip on securely, the adapters nest neatly into their own slots and the handle has a comfortable rubber grip which, like everything else, is made from high-quality material. It’s fully portable but sturdy without being overly bulky, and the angled display means you’re not hunching down to read it. You can tell this is a tool that’s been used in the real world before being signed off.

Pairing it with the STIHL AS System battery is another win. Even if you’ve never owned a STIHL product before, the kit gives you everything you need to get started immediately. Battery life for such a compact, lightweight unit is impressive – pushing toward half an hour of run time in real use – which has been more than enough for multiple tyres, several inflatables and the odd sports ball without needing a recharge. Charging time is minimal, and the process is refreshingly straightforward.

There’s also peace of mind built in. The KOA 20 comes backed by a three-year warranty and with STIHL dealers located all around the country, support and assistance are never far away.

What I appreciate most is that it hasn’t overpromised. It just works. Every time. No theatrical claims, no glossy marketing tricks – just reliable performance whether you’re in the driveway, in the bush or somewhere in between. It’s the exact opposite of the ‘miracle inflator’ genre: tools that promise the world and overheat under the weight of a basic tyre.

Like many Aussies, I spend plenty of time juggling different roles – driver, weekend adventurer, home handyman, parent, pool guy, occasional beachgoer, sometimes cyclist – and the KOA 20 has slotted seamlessly into all of them. It’s already saved me time, saved me hassle and probably saved me a few roadside frustrations. It’s one of those rare tools that’s equally valuable in the shed, the boot of the car and the camping box.

If you’re sick of flimsy inflators that fail when you really need them or fed up with flashy ‘too good to be true’ gadgets that don’t deliver, the STIHL KOA 20 is the reset button. It’s a practical, robust, smartly engineered inflator built for the way Australians live and travel. For me, it’s not just an upgrade – it’s the first inflator I’ve owned that I genuinely trust.

And honestly – I can’t imagine going back.

The KOA 20 is available as a skin for $169 or as a complete kit with battery and charger for $249. With hundreds of STIHL dealers nationwide, it’s easy to get hands-on – visit stihl.com.au
